Plymouth Waterfront Prepares for a Thrilling Summer with New Businesses and Exciting Events
Plymouth’s waterfront is gearing up for an exciting summer, with new businesses opening and a wide range of events, including Pirates Weekend, Summer Sessions concerts, and the 80th anniversary of WWII’s end.
Plymouth's waterfront is set for an exciting summer, with new businesses opening and a series of highly anticipated events. At least three new businesses are expected to start trading at the Barbican this spring. These include the Brazilian-themed restaurant Lost in Rio and Mega Shakes from the city centre, both relocating to the Barbican, along with My Favourite Glass, which has moved from Southside Street to 'The House that Jack Built'. Additionally, a new business named Sugar is set to open in the former small Harbourside chip shop, located between Platters and Monty’s Cafe.
In terms of events, the Pirates Weekend, Summer Sessions concerts, and celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II are expected to draw thousands of visitors. The launch of the Pirate Fun Run, aimed at attracting 500 participants this year, has kicked off the event season.
According to Jon Walton, the CEO of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP), the Barbican area is always bustling with activity: “The Barbican never sleeps,” he said. He emphasized that whenever a business vacates, another quickly fills the space. He also highlighted the area's high occupancy rates, which remain some of the best in the region. The events season runs from Easter to October, but PWP has also worked hard to bring festive events during Christmas, including the popular Barbican lights switch-on and Santa Fun Run, which saw 800 participants last year.
Walton mentioned that while the Barbican was relatively quiet in the early months, it is now awakening as the weather improves: “It’s starting to come alive now - the glow of the sun attracts people down here. And where else would people want to be?”
The Pirates Fun Run is an annual event supporting Jeremiah’s Journey, with participants encouraged to walk, jog, or run around the waterfront in pirate attire. The event is part of the Plymouth Pirates Weekend, which will take place on May 17 and 18. The run itself will occur on May 18 and is expected to draw more than 500 participants this year. The event will also offer free and paid activities along the waterfront, extending from the Barbican to the Royal William Yard.
Other events to look forward to this summer include:
- VE Day - May 8, Plymouth Hoe
- Pirates Weekend - May 17-18, The Barbican and waterfront
- Rehabilitation Triathlon - June 26, Plymouth Hoe
- Armed Forces Day - June 28, Plymouth Hoe
- Plymouth Summer Sessions - June 12-15, Plymouth Hoe
- British Firework Championships - August 13-14, Plymouth Hoe

With all these exciting activities planned, Plymouth’s waterfront is ready for a memorable summer.
