According to the latest policy update, titled Simpler Recycling in England, most homes and businesses will be required to use four separate waste containers—these could be bags, bins, or stackable boxes. The government has assured that four bins will be the maximum default requirement and that local authorities will retain flexibility in implementing the new system based on regional needs. The goal of the reform is to create a uniform waste collection strategy across England, eliminating the "postcode lottery" that has caused confusion due to varying local recycling policies. Key Changes in the New Recycling System Standardized Recycling Bins: Households will use four containers for different waste types, reducing inconsistencies in recycling practices across England. Weekly Food Waste Collection: To address hygiene concerns, all households will have their food waste collected at least once per week. Implementation Timeline By March 31, 2025 Businesses and non-domestic premises must arrange for the collection of recyclable waste, excluding garden waste. Paper and Card Collection: To prevent contamination, paper and card should be collected separately from other dry recyclables. Currently, 121 local councils in England already follow this practice.
