Former Teacher with Terminal Illness Raises Thousands for Hospice Care
Taimur Huq, a former teacher at Devonport High School for Boys, has been diagnosed with terminal COPD. Despite his illness, he is determined to raise funds for St Luke’s Hospice, which is providing care for him and his family. With the support of friends, family, and former students, he has already raised over £6,500.
A dedicated former teacher, who has influenced the lives of thousands of students throughout his career, is now on a mission to give back to the hospice staff caring for him after receiving a devastating diagnosis.
Many students from Devonport High School for Boys will fondly remember Taimur Huq, a beloved mathematics teacher who played a key role in organizing the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and the Ten Tors races during his 17 years at the school. Beyond his passion for education, he consistently encouraged friends and colleagues to participate in St Luke’s Men’s Day Out, a fundraising event aimed at supporting the hospice's invaluable work.
However, in 2023, Taimur's life took a difficult turn when he was diagnosed with severe COPD following complications from COVID-19 and two bouts of double pneumonia. His worsening health forced him into early retirement, and he now requires round-the-clock oxygen support.
A Community Comes Together
Despite his health struggles, Taimur remains determined to participate in this year’s Men’s Day Out—this time on his mobility scooter, surrounded by a supportive group of male friends who will ensure he has enough oxygen and keep his scooter charged, even if it means making stops at every pub along the way.
His wife, Tristin, shared with PlymouthLive:
"St Luke’s has been incredible, not only for Taimur but for me and our four daughters as well. He is very weak and mostly homebound, but that hasn’t stopped him from pushing forward with his fundraising efforts."
With unwavering support from his family, former colleagues, and friends—including those from the Tap and Barrell Pub—his fundraising campaign has exceeded all expectations. Initially setting a modest target of £500, he has now raised over £6,500, thanks in part to a cake sale organized by students at Devonport High School.
Making a Difference
On February 28, staff and students from DHSB will present a cheque to St Luke’s Hospice, further contributing to the cause. Meanwhile, Taimur has been overwhelmed by the heartfelt messages of support from former students on his JustGiving page.
With the Men’s Day Out event scheduled for March 22, Taimur remains hopeful that he can raise even more funds for St Luke’s Hospice, which is based at Stamford Lane, Turnchapel.
For those who wish to support his cause, donations can be made via his JustGiving page.
