Historic Return of Waverley Paddle Steamer to Devon This Summer

The world’s last sea-going paddle steamer, Waverley, will return to Devon this summer for a series of cruises. Starting from August 28, the ship will visit Plymouth, Dartmouth, Torquay, and more, offering passengers a unique steamship experience.

The famous Waverley paddle steamer is set for a historic return to Devon this summer, offering a series of unforgettable cruises across the South West. As the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world, Waverley will be a unique sight for locals and visitors alike.

Sailings will run from Thursday, August 28 to Monday, September 1, with Plymouth and Dartmouth among the destinations welcoming this iconic vessel. Built in the 1940s for the London and North Eastern Railway, Waverley now operates day, afternoon, and evening cruises throughout the UK. Passengers aboard Waverley can enjoy the nostalgic sound and sight of a traditional steamship, as well as the opportunity to visit the engine room and watch the massive paddles turn.

Full catering facilities will be available on board, including hot and cold snacks, tea and cake in the afternoons, hot meals in the dining saloon, and refreshments in one of Waverley’s period lounges. A souvenir shop is also located on board for passengers to purchase mementos of their journey.

Captain Dominic McCall, Waverley’s Master, shared his excitement for the return, saying, “In 2024, Waverley received a fantastic welcome in the South West with tickets selling out quickly. We had a memorable moment sailing into Fowey harbour, and the highlight for many was meeting Kingswear Castle on the River Dart, with both steamers side by side and their whistles tooting in unison.”

This year, Torquay has been added to the cruise itinerary, expanding the unique sailings Waverley offers. On Friday, August 29, Waverley will sail from Plymouth and Falmouth to explore Dodman Point, Looe Bay, and the Rame Heritage Coast, followed by a sunset cruise from Plymouth to Whitsand Bay and Cawsand Bay. On Saturday, August 30, she will call at Torquay at 12:30pm, offering an afternoon cruise along the South Devon Coast, followed by a 3:45pm sailing to Dartmouth to meet Kingswear Castle. This event is part of the Dartmouth Royal Regatta celebrations.

On Monday, September 1, Waverley will depart from Torquay at 12:15pm for Weymouth, giving passengers the chance to enjoy stunning views of Lyme Bay, Portland Bill, Durdle Door, and Lulworth Cove. After this historic return to Torquay, Waverley will continue her South West programme with a cruise from Dartmouth, Plymouth, and Fowey on August 31 to Start Point, Prawle Point, and the Eddystone Lighthouse. The final sailing on September 1 will be a South Devon to Dorset Coastal Explorer cruise, departing from Plymouth, Torquay, and Weymouth.

Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of the English Riviera BID Company, expressed excitement about the return, saying, “We are thrilled to have the iconic Waverley back in Torquay, providing a unique opportunity for visitors and residents to experience the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer. This will undoubtedly boost our local tourism economy.”
