Man Becomes Millionaire After Buying Scratchcard While Waiting for Burger

A man from Liskeard has become a millionaire after winning £1 million on a National Lottery Scratchcard. Craig Haggie, 36, was simply out for lunch when he decided to pop into a local shop and pick up two scratchcards. Little did he know that this simple act would change his life forever.

After ordering his burger and having some time to kill, Craig bought a drink for his brother and two scratchcards. When he scratched off the winning ticket, he realized he had won £1 million. As soon as he realized, he was overwhelmed by the excitement and immediately focused on how to keep the ticket safe until he could claim his prize.

Craig’s family was in complete disbelief when he returned home. He said: “It was absolute pandemonium, my family were jumping around the office screaming while my first thought was, where’s the safest place to keep the scratchcard.” He and his brother decided to tape the ticket to Craig’s body to keep it secure. After a brief struggle with sweat, they decided the safest place was a saucepan on top of the kitchen cabinet.

Craig’s wife, Zoe, 33, was at work when she received the news. Initially, she thought it was a prank. “Craig is always winding me up so I just didn’t believe him,” Zoe said. She was cleaning a client’s house at the time, but after rushing to meet Craig at his work, she realized the news was real. The enormity of the win soon sank in.

Zoe added: “I sat on the floor and cried. It was just the relief that we could finally sort our home out and get a bedroom for all the kids.” The couple has four children between the ages of 5 and 11, and they live in a small two-bedroom bungalow.

The couple, married for six years, plans to use some of the money for home renovations. Zoe, an avid sketcher, has been planning renovations for years and is excited to finally start turning her ideas into reality. “This win has just been incredible for our family,” she said. “I can’t wait to start work on our new home.”

Craig, who is the managing director of WCL Storage Systems, a family-owned warehouse storage company, bought the winning ticket from the Spar store on Fore Street in Callington. The £5 National Lottery Cash Vault Scratchcard has odds of 1 in 3.39 for winning a prize, with prizes ranging from £5 to £1 million.
