New Pedestrian and Cycle Crossing Approved for Cot Hill

A new pedestrian and cycle crossing has been approved for Cot Hill following public consultation. The project aims to enhance safety and accessibility while improving connections between Saltram Park and Underwood Recreation Ground.

A new pedestrian and cycle crossing has been approved for Cot Hill, following a public consultation regarding the project near the Marshall Road junction. The initiative aims to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, including those with disabilities, along this busy route.

The crossing will create a safer and more convenient link between Saltram Park and Underwood Recreation Ground, further improving the National Cycle Network. In addition to the new crossing, the scheme will include:

  • A dropped kerb crossing on Marshall Road.
  • A raised table crossing on Dudley Road.
  • A wider, shared-use path on Cot Hill.
  • Double yellow lines on the eastern (uphill) side of Cot Hill between Marshall Road and Dudley Road to prevent obstructive parking.

The project is entirely grant-funded by National Highways through Sustrans, ensuring no local budget impact.

Official Statement

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, highlighted the importance of the improvements, stating:

“These improvements will make a big difference for people walking and cycling along this busy route. They will make it easier and safer for them to travel between Saltram and other parts of Plympton, including Underwood Recreation Ground, as well as alleviate problem parking in the area.

Helping people to walk and cycle more improves their health and well-being while also reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.”

Project Timeline

The decision was officially approved today and can be viewed on the Plymouth City Council website. Construction is planned to take place during the summer.
