Plymouth City Council Sells Newly-Built Housing Estate for £4M to Fund More Homes
Plymouth City Council is selling a newly-built housing estate in Plymstock for £4 million. The funds will be reinvested in affordable housing projects across the city, addressing the housing crisis and supporting urban development.
Plymouth City Council has announced the sale of a newly-built housing estate in Plymstock for £4 million, with the proceeds set to be reinvested into affordable housing projects across the city. The 10 properties at Broadland Gardens, developed on the site of the former Morley Youth Centre, are now on the market with prices starting from £355,000.
This marks the first housing development by the council since 1983. The estate, comprising a mix of terrace, coach house, semi-detached, and detached homes, was always intended to be sold, with the funds directed toward further housing initiatives.
The revenue from this sale will be pooled with other financial sources, including Section 106 funds, recycled Right to Buy receipts, and Brownfield Land Release funding. This will contribute to the council’s 'Plan for Homes 4' initiative, boosting its budget to nearly £8 million. Combined with existing funds, the total housing investment will reach approximately £11.5 million.
The Plan for Homes program has already facilitated the construction of over 7,500 homes in Plymouth. The initiative aims to combat the ongoing housing crisis, support economic growth, and provide sustainable housing solutions for residents in need.
Cllr Chris Penberthy, cabinet member for housing, communities, and cooperative development, emphasized the urgency of the housing crisis, stating:
'I’m pleased to strengthen the Plan for Homes with this funding. We are in the middle of a housing crisis, and it’s our responsibility to find solutions for families in need. These are real people looking for a basic human right – a place to call home. We will continue to develop innovative strategies to address the crisis here in Plymouth.'
With the increasing demand for housing and economic factors worsening the situation, this investment is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the city meets its housing needs in the years to come.
