A tragic incident occurred in Cornwall when 78-year-old Brenda Hill from Plymouth choked on a meat pasty at the Kernow Mill café in Trerulefoot last May. Brenda, who had swallowing difficulties following a stroke, had initially ordered vegetable soup, but when informed it was unavailable, she changed her order to a hot meat pasty.
According to the inquest at Truro Coroner's Court, the café staff acted quickly to assist Brenda, with one member of staff attempting to slap her back and perform first aid. Though unable to position her for the Heimlich manoeuvre, the staff member continued CPR until paramedics arrived. The paramedics also praised the café worker's efforts to save Brenda.
The coroner noted that Brenda had several underlying medical conditions that contributed to her choking. Despite the heroic efforts of the staff and emergency responders, Brenda tragically passed away, and the coroner concluded the death as accidental.
