Spectacular 90-Year-Old Magnolia Blossoms at Lukesland Gardens
A magnolia tree at Lukesland Gardens, believed to be the largest of its kind in the UK, is blooming beautifully. The tree, nearing its 90th birthday, has become a family legacy and is now a stunning feature of the garden.
A magnificent magnolia tree at Lukesland Gardens, located on the edge of Ivybridge, is currently in full bloom, with its fallen petals carpeting the garden in a beautiful pink hue. This tree, believed to be the largest of its kind in the UK, will be 90 years old next year and was originally planted by Howard Howell, the grandfather of the current owner, John Howell.
The garden, still managed by the Howell family, is open to the public on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Bank Holidays until June. The magnolia is just one of the many stunning features of the 24-acre grounds, which also include camellias, spring bulbs, and wildflowers. Mrs. Lorna Howell, John Howell's wife, shared images of the tree in bloom and explained its unique significance.
Although the National Tree Register doesn't record the overall spread of trees, Mrs. Howell believes that the size of this particular magnolia makes it the largest of its kind in the UK. She said, 'To be a UK champion tree, the National Tree Register registers the height, age, and girth of the trunk, but not the overall spread of the tree. If this is measured, the Lukesland magnolia is the biggest of its kind in the country.'
The tree has become a cherished part of the Howell family's history, having been planted in 1936. The location of the garden, with water from the Addicombe Brook flowing through it, provides a perfect environment for the tree to thrive. Mrs. Howell further explained, 'It is sheltered from the Dartmoor winds and has plenty of space to spread, so it’s very happy! Even though it’s nearly 90 years old, the tree is still growing vigorously.'
The tree's early March blooms are always at risk of frost, and recent cold weather has affected the flowers, but the tree remains a breathtaking sight. For more information about visiting Lukesland Gardens, check their website at www.lukesland.co.uk for details on opening times.
