The Edgcumbe Arms: A Historic Pub Blending Tradition, Hospitality, and Local Flavor

Located in Cremyll, the 400-year-old Edgcumbe Arms attracts visitors with its traditional carvery, dog-friendly atmosphere, and strong ties to local ferry traffic. With newly renovated guest rooms and a loyalty scheme, it's becoming a favorite destination.

Nestled in the charming village of Cremyll, the Edgcumbe Arms is more than 400 years old and retains its authentic character, far from a polished tourist attraction. This beloved pub draws visitors not only for its historic charm but also for its hearty food and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

One of the main attractions is the popular carvery, which features two meat choices, a variety of locally grown vegetables, homemade desserts, and vegetarian options. Guests can enjoy these with a selection of regional beers from Dartmoor and St Austell.

What sets the Edgcumbe Arms apart is its dog-friendly policy. The pub offers treats, toys, blankets, bowls, and more for furry companions, making it a true home-away-from-home for both humans and dogs.

Interestingly, the pub operates primarily as a daytime venue due to the limited local population. Owner Dan, who took over in the past year, explained that they mainly serve tourists visiting Edgcumbe House, ferry passengers, and residents from nearby villages such as Kingsand, Cawsand, Millbrook, and Torpoint.

Dan shared: 'Bringing this historic pub back to life has been our top priority. Thanks to our collaboration with the ferry operator, loyalty card holders can enjoy free return ferry tickets to Plymouth. Ferry traffic has increased significantly since the service moved to the Royal William Yard, and we hope this becomes permanent.'

The pub also enjoys a growing relationship with the Friends of Edgcumbe House, aiming to offer expanded services during special events like the vintage car rally and fireworks competition viewable from Mountbatten.

With six newly refurbished rooms available for overnight stays at £89 per night, including a Cornish breakfast, the Edgcumbe Arms is quickly becoming a favored retreat. The loyalty card program offers additional discounts and deals, best discovered in person.

Dan and Viki Roberts, the new landlords under St Austell Brewery, are honest about the challenges ahead. Dan said, 'Margins are tightening, especially with upcoming changes in April. Many in tourism will struggle more than they admit. All we can do is provide the best experience and value for our customers, hoping to earn their loyalty long-term.'

The Edgcumbe Arms is located at Cremyll, PL10 1HX, open from 11am to 5pm off-season and 11am to 8pm in high season. It’s accessible via the number 70 bus from Plymouth and the Cremyll Ferry, which departs every 30 minutes.
