Violent Boyfriend Avoids Jail but Faces Strict Penalties
Tommy Bottrill, who threatened his ex-partner with violence, received a suspended 15-month prison sentence. The court warned that if he reoffends, he will spend most of his adult life behind bars.
A man who reacted violently after being dumped has been warned that he could spend most of his adult life in prison if he reoffends. Tommy Bottrill, 27, from Evenden Court in Torpoint, became aggressive and sent threatening messages to his ex-partner after their breakup.
During a sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court on Friday, March 7, the court heard that Bottrill made death threats against his ex, leaving her in fear for her safety. The incident occurred on December 14 last year when he sent violent messages, threatening to harm or kill her.
History of Violence in Relationships
The court was informed that this was not the first time Bottrill had been violent towards his ex-partner. Testimonies revealed that he had exhibited similar behavior in most of his past relationships.
His defense lawyer, Jason Beal, argued that Bottrill had a troubled childhood and that the breakup led him into depression. Beal stated that his client stopped taking antidepressants and turned to illegal drugs and alcohol, worsening his mental health and anger issues.
At one point, Bottrill was admitted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth due to suicidal thoughts. Beal added that his client now realizes the severity of his actions, has been sober for two months, and is committed to staying clean.
Strict Sentencing and Final Warning
Judge Simon Carr described Bottrill’s offense as particularly disturbing. He noted, 'In every relationship you have had, violence seems to follow when things don’t go your way. Your ex-partner had every right to leave you, but you responded with threats and intimidation.'
The judge emphasized that Bottrill’s anger was fueled by drug and alcohol misuse and warned, 'If you don’t address these issues, you will spend most of your adult life in prison.'
Bottrill was sentenced to 15 months in jail, suspended for two years. His penalties also include:
- 27 days of rehabilitation
- 15 days of rehabilitation activity requirement
- 200 hours of unpaid work
- A seven-month curfew
- A restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim
The court made it clear that any future offenses would result in severe consequences.
