The viral pub game 'Wetherspoons The Game' is set to arrive in Plymouth this weekend, aiming to collect meals for the homeless in a unique way. The event will take place at The Union Rooms in the city center on Sunday, March 2.
Chris 'Spoons' Illman, the creator of the initiative, has been visiting a different JD Wetherspoon pub on the first Sunday of each month. Kind-hearted strangers are encouraged to order meals via the Wetherspoon app for the table where Chris is seated, and these meals are then donated to local charities to help feed the homeless.
A Nationwide Movement to Help the Homeless
The initiative, which started in 2018, has gained massive success, with nearly 780,000 members on the Facebook page 'Wetherspoons The Game.' Last year, at a pub in Birmingham, about 300 meals were donated through this project.
Chris, who hails from Portsmouth, started this movement after facing personal hardships, including a cancer diagnosis, a relationship breakdown, and a period of homelessness. Since then, he has organized similar events across the UK, with food orders coming from as far as Australia, Brazil, and Puerto Rico.
How It Works
Each participating Wetherspoon pub is notified in advance about the expected influx of meal orders. Supporters place their orders through the Wetherspoon app, and the meals are delivered in takeaway boxes or bags, ready to be collected by local charities.
To ensure efficiency, the number of meal orders is now capped at 200 per event. However, snacks like crisps, nuts, and biscuits can be ordered without any limits. In Liverpool, for instance, 5,000 snack items were donated.
Supporting the Cause
'Wetherspoons The Game' is supported by BillyChip, a safe and secure currency system for the homeless. Supporters can purchase a Billy Chip for £2 and give it to a homeless person, who can then exchange it at registered outlets for a hot drink or food.
The Plymouth event will begin at 5 PM, and the Facebook post requesting food orders will go live at 6 PM. Those interested in participating can place orders via the Wetherspoon app and contribute to feeding the local homeless community.
