British Gas Extends ‘You Pay: We Pay’ Initiative to Support Struggling Customers
British Gas is extending its ‘You Pay: We Pay’ initiative, offering £10 million in support to help customers struggling with energy bills by matching their payments 100%.
British Gas has announced an extension to its ‘You Pay: We Pay’ initiative, providing additional financial support to customers struggling to pay their energy bills. Under this program, British Gas matches 100% of the payments made by eligible customers, effectively doubling their contributions to help prevent or reduce energy debt.Initially launched in June 2024, the initiative has already assisted thousands of households facing fuel poverty. With this extension, British Gas is introducing new payment break options, ensuring that customers who cannot afford regular payments can still receive support. Additionally, hardship grants remain available for those in need. The ‘You Pay: We Pay’ scheme is part of British Gas’s wider £140 million support package, which also includes grants of up to £2,000 through the British Gas Energy Trust (BGET) and funding for advice centres and charities. This month, British Gas is reaching out to over 600,000 customers who may be eligible for assistance, encouraging them to explore the available support options. In an open letter, Chris O’Shea, Group Chief Executive of Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, emphasized the company’s commitment to helping struggling households:“We know this winter has been particularly tough for many households, and it’s not always easy to keep on top of growing bills. We want to ensure as many customers as possible get the support they need, which is why we are extending our ‘You Pay: We Pay’ scheme.“It’s our responsibility to provide support for our customers, and that’s why we’ve allocated £140 million to help those who need it most—through direct financial assistance and our continued support of the incredible team at the British Gas Energy Trust.”The initiative works by matching payments made over a six-month period, with no minimum debt requirement to qualify. For instance, a customer paying £100 per month over six months will contribute £600, while British Gas adds an additional £600 to their account. This extra credit can help reduce outstanding balances accumulated during the winter months.British Gas continues to encourage struggling customers to reach out and explore their options for financial relief.
