Plymouth School Implements Permanent Traffic Restrictions to Promote Walking

Stuart Road Primary Academy in Plymouth will make its traffic restrictions permanent after a successful 18-month trial. The initiative aims to encourage more children to walk to school by closing parts of Palmerston Street and Dairy Lane during drop-off and pick-up times.

Stuart Road Primary Academy in Plymouth is set to implement permanent traffic restrictions to ensure safer school zones for children. The decision comes after a successful 18-month trial that showed a positive impact, with more children walking to school.

The road closure will affect Palmerston Street and part of Dairy Lane on weekdays during school drop-off and pick-up times. The restricted hours will be between 7:50 am and 8:50 am, and from 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm. However, residents, businesses, emergency vehicles, service vehicles, and parents with children who have disabilities or hold Blue Badges will still have access during these hours.

The traffic ban will be enforced using ‘slot-in’ bollards at the junctions of Palmerston Street with Stuart Road and Crawford Road. These bollards will be placed by school staff during closure times and removed afterwards, providing a more sustainable way for the school to manage traffic without relying on volunteers or stewards.

During the trial period, plastic barriers were used at key junctions to block traffic, and school staff and volunteers helped manage the closures. The new bollards will replace these temporary barriers, providing a more permanent and organized solution.

A survey conducted by walking and cycling charity Sustrans revealed a 37% increase in children walking to school and a 45% decrease in the number of children being driven. Plymouth City Council has stated that the Safer School Streets trial has been welcomed by both parents and residents.

The permanent traffic ban is set to take effect on March 25, further enhancing the school's efforts to reduce traffic congestion and promote healthier, more sustainable travel options for students.
