Technical Fault Causes Major Delays on Torpoint Ferry as Thousands Head to Plymouth for Pirates Weekend

A technical fault on one of the Torpoint ferries caused significant delays this morning, with only one ferry operating and 30-minute waits reported on both sides of the River Tamar.

Travelers crossing the River Tamar faced major delays this morning due to a technical fault on one of the Torpoint ferries. As of 7:11 AM, Tamar Crossings reported approximately 30-minute wait times on both the Plymouth and Cornwall sides of the river, with only one ferry in operation.

The disruption comes on a busy day, with thousands expected to attend Plymouth's popular annual Pirates Weekend event. The ferry operator urged commuters to plan accordingly and follow traffic staff instructions.

In a statement on social media, Tamar Crossings said: 'There is currently an approximate 30-minute queue for the ferry crossing from both sides of the river. Please plan your journey accordingly and follow the directions of staff managing traffic.'

Earlier, they explained: 'Due to a technical fault there will be a delay to the start of our second ferry service. Our one-ferry service timetable will remain in place until further notice.'

Traffic monitoring service Inrix also reported delays on the Tamar Bridge, stating: 'Slow traffic on A38 westbound before Tamar Bridge heading into Cornwall.'

Although the second ferry later resumed operations, queues continued to affect both vehicular and pedestrian traffic across the river.
